research project ADMIT was concerned with student mobility and admissions
to higher education institutions in five EU countries. A major objectives
of the research was to compare policies and statistical data at
a European and national level; to review previous research, and
to provide a conceptual framework to aid the partners' understanding
of the differing systems in operation.

were also scrutinised. In addition, semi-structured interviews were
conducted with policy makers and others to shed further light on policy

project. The number of case studies varied, due to differing national contexts
and decisions taken in relation to the balance between diversity and detail
