Project SMES TRAINING - Small business training and competitiveness: Building case studies in different European cultural contexts
Overview The main objective of the project was to identify and describe the learning processes experienced by SMES, trying to understand these processes in the context where they take place. The emphasis given to the context in this research project was aimed at understanding both the organisational situation in which learning processes develop and the broader cultural context that surrounds them.

The project considered case studies as a suitable methodology. To start with, a review of the main literature on case studies was undertaken, with reflections on its adequacy for the research purposes. Pilot cases were carried out by research partners, which facilitated the subsequent discussion on a common methodological framework that would allow the partnership to proceed with fieldwork. (Sauquet, 1999, pp. 3, 4)

Insight In the paper on case studies (Sauquet, 1999), the methodological approach and individual pilot cases are described in detail. See also the final  project report (Sauquet, 2002).
