This book presents major outcomes of the European research project INNOVALOC, which was carried out under the EU 5th Framework Programme and coordinated by Teresa de Noronha Vaz, Professor of Regional and Innovation Economics at the University of Algarve, Portugal. 
Based on comparative studies in seven European countries, this book provides an analytical study of innovation in small enterprises and its role in the dynamics of local development in lagging areas. It also evaluates the effect of the local environment on the innovative potental of small firms.
